Pap Smear & HPV Screening

The Pap smear, or test, and HPV screening help in the early prevention of cervical cancer.

Perhaps you’ve heard there are new guidelines suggesting that not all women need an annual Pap, and you’re confused as to whether you need the test. For a clear understanding of what these guidelines are, read the recommendations below of The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists:

  • Women ages 21 to 29 should have a Pap test every 3 years. HPV testing alone can be considered for women who are 25 to 29, but a Pap is preferred.
  • Women ages 30 to 65 have three options for testing. They can have both a Pap test and an HPV test every 5 years. They can have a Pap test alone every 3 years. Or they can have HPV testing alone every 5 years.
  • After age 65, you can stop having cervical cancer screenings if you have never had abnormal cervical cells or cervical cancer, and you’ve had two or three negative screening tests in a row, depending on the type of test.

What Happens if I Get Abnormal Results From My Pap Smear?

Abnormal results don’t usually mean you have cancer. In many cases, treatment can prevent cervical cancer from developing. If your result is abnormal, be assured you’re in good hands with our board-certified physicians and providers. They’ll walk you through the steps of how your condition will be treated.

The HPV (human papillomavirus) test looks for several strains of the virus that can cause cellular change. HPV is usually done at the same time as a Pap and checks for abnormalities or the presence of cancer in the cervix. HPVs are classified by number as to HPV type. Some HPV types cause papilloma (warts). If you have these, don’t worry – they’re non-cancerous tumors. However, some types of HPV are known to cause cancer including cancer of the cervix, vagina, vulva, anus, and parts of the mouth or throat.

The American Cancer Society recommends that women between the ages of 30 to 65 have an HPV test with their Pap every 5 years.

Vaginal Rejuvenation

Texas Center for Health providers understand the sensitive nature of a woman’s desire to restore confidence and relieve pain or discomfort, thus the need for vaginal rejuvenation.

Vaginal Rejuvenation is a broad term for a group of procedures designed to address specific concerns of women with regard to their vitality, circulation and tightness and can also be used when referring to refining the appearance or physical sensation of the external genitalia.

Non-surgical Vaginal Rejuvenation

This non-invasive procedure is a game changer for women as it can dramatically improve vaginal laxity, stress urinary incontinence, loss of lubrication and decreased sexual sensation. Using a radio frequency laser device, physicians are able to induce laser energy to induce collagen and tighten the vagina.

STD Screenings

Discretion is paramount to your health. If you think you may have a sexually transmitted disease, established patients can schedule an appointment on-line, new patients can call our office and ask our team member to schedule a discretionary appointment for you.

Quick, easy STD testing is available at Texas Center for Health for both men and women. Our office makes screening simple with several methods by drawing blood, collecting a urine sample or swabbing patients. Results typically take 7-9 days depending on the method of testing. We can test for the following STD tests:

  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea
  • Trichomoniasis
  • HIV
  • Syphilis
  • Gardnerella
  • Ureaplasma
  • Mycoplasma
  • Herpes I & II

Breast Exams

A breast exam is an important part of your routine physical checkups. You should have a clinical breast exam every 1-3 years starting at age 20 and every year starting at age 40. Your doctor may recommend more frequent exams if you notice changes in your breast or have a strong family history of breast cancer.

Menopause Management

No matter how active or fit you may be, as a woman you’re eventually going to go through menopause. It’s just a part of a natural biological process that happens as you mature, marked by a decline in fertility where your ovaries produce less estrogen and progesterone.

This in turn may cause some uncomfortable symptoms like weight gain, hot flashes, and trouble sleeping. Menopause officially begins 12 months after your last menstrual period. This is an important milestone because if you experience post-menopausal vaginal bleeding, you need to see your doctor as it may indicate a serious medical issue.

During your GYN visit, we’ll send you for blood work and take a deep dive into whether you’re having effects of hormone loss. Once we have your blood test results, we’ll schedule you for a follow-up visit to review your results.

To optimize your hormone health, we can replace hormones in a number of ways (see Hormone Replacement Therapy). Using your blood work and exam results, your provider will be able to maximize your hormone health by replacing what you lack. When you know the facts about the stages of menopause, you can take a more active role in managing the symptoms that often come with it.

Sexual Dysfunction

There's no reason to be embarrassed about wanting great sexual health -- getting answers about and treatment for all health problems is important. Your doctor can help you fix or treat your sexual health issues or sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). If you notice something wrong, ask for help.
